KQED Do Now: Engage Students in Current Events Using Twitter

Presentation Category:
Curriculum Integration
Session Type:
CA Career Pathways Session
Presentation Description:
Learn how to bring social media into your classroom with KQED Do Now, a weekly twitter chat for students to debate about current events. KQED Public Media in San Francisco's Bay Area launched Do Now, a weekly activity that engages students in current events using Twitter. Every week, they join a twitter chat, discussing and debating on topical issues in civics, government and policy, science, and popular culture. Using Twitter, they learn to form a variety of arguments. Sometimes they'll post a 140 character opinion; sometimes they will generate a meme that argues their point. The options can range in modality and rhetoric. The goal is for students to learn the affordances of social media and mobile devices for civic engagement, where they can practice digital communication and gain insight on how they represent themselves online.
